Differences Between Ejector Pins and Punches

In the manufacturing field, ejector pins and punches are two crucial components, but they have distinct differences in function, design, and application.

Function

Ejector pins are mainly used in the plastic injection molding process. After the molten plastic cools and solidifies in the mold cavity, ejector pins extend from specific positions in the mold. Their role is to push the formed plastic products out of the mold, ensuring smooth demolding. For example, in the production of plastic bottle caps, ejector pins help release the caps from the mold.

Punches, on the other hand, are employed for processes like punching, stamping, and cutting. They work in conjunction with presses to create holes or cut specific shapes in materials such as metal sheets, leather, or paper. In the production of metal brackets, punches are used to punch holes for assembly.

Design

Ejector pins are typically long, slender cylinders with a relatively simple structure. One end is fixed to the mold’s ejection system, and the other end, which contacts the product, may have different shapes like round, flat, or tapered to adapt to various product surfaces for stable ejection.

Punches have more diverse designs. The working end of a punch, the part that makes contact with the material, can be round, square, or custom – shaped according to the processing requirements. This end is usually made of extremely hard materials to endure the high pressure and friction during stamping.

Application

Ejector pins are essential in plastic injection molding and are widely used in industries that produce plastic products, including consumer goods, electronics, and toys.

Punches are indispensable in sheet metal processing, automotive manufacturing, and hardware production, where they are used to create various metal components, from small washers to large automotive body parts.
